
Japanese Incense Making

The creation of rituals surrounding incense exist across cultures, connecting us and our histories with a fragrant thread. Join us for an intimate class in learning the history and traditions of making Japanese style incense.
In this class you will make 8-10 incense cones from all natural materials as well as experience unique and rare fragrant woods and herbs from the Monkoh tradition of listening to incense. You will also receive a kiribako (wood box made in Japan) to carry your incense cones.
Tuition includes all materials. Snacks and drinks for purchase.

About the Instructor:
Mia Reiko Braverman is an artist and incense maker based in Portland, Oregon. A first-generation Japanese American raised in Kauai, Hawaii, Mia draws deep inspiration from her cultural roots, blending tradition with artistic exploration.
She is the creator of Fumi, a project named after her grandmother, that is dedicated to honoring ancestral connection, the craft of being home, and the sensory power of the arts. Through Fumi, Mia offers handmade incense, curated found objects, and creations by fellow artists. Fumi also serves as a gathering place, hosting workshops like incense-making classes that invite others to connect through craft and ritual.
