Vessels by Tim Warner [Opening Reception]

  • Fumi 4007 North Mississippi Avenue Portland, OR, 97227 United States (map)

Exhibit Dates: April 23 - May 11

Opening Reception: Fri April 24, 5-7p

One of the great benefits of having a permanent space has been developing genuine relationships with our neighbors, both business and residential alike. One neighbor in particular, Tim Warner, has become a dear friend. Tim lives around the corner from the shop and was an early regular. Our conversations were always rich and deep. I soon learned about his ceramics practice, one he has returned to in retirement and after seeing some of his pieces, I was excited to add his tea cups to the Fumi offerings.

In time, Tim invited me to his studio and he shared more of his works in progress. It is such an honor to witness an artists’ workspace. It’s a vulnerable private world filled with questions, starts and stops, tests, and finished pieces that may never leave the light of the studio. A highlight of my visit was seeing Tim’s urns. It spurred a conversation about grief, the passing of family, friends, and pets.

I was struck by his intentional vessels. Their rustic textured patinas paired with the arms of tree branches he collected in his yard, reaching up and out of the top closure of each piece. Totems to the life of loved ones ~ shelters, homes, a place for rest.

Creating spaces to honor ancestors, related or chosen, is a value here at Fumi. Perhaps you’ve seen our Ancestors’ Altar where we have invited the public to contribute photos of friends and family that have passed away. These spaces have always been part of households throughout human history and while they look different across cultures they are united in spirit. It felt like a natural progression, and a touch of kismet, to invite Tim to exhibit his urns here at the shop.

We’d like to invite you to this special window exhibition of Tim’s pieces.
