lisssten: Essie Humberston, ann annie, Steven Leslie Douglas

  • Fumi 4007 N Mississippi Portland USA (map)

We're honored to host Essie Humberston, ann annie, and Steven Leslie Douglas for a live performance on:

Sun July 5th, doors @ 5p

Three artists whose work we deeply admire, each performing solo acoustic sets.

We got to know Essie Humberston’s music through her project, Essie and the Hum (recetly voted one of Portland’s best new bands by Willamette Week). We were immediately taken by Essie's voice ~ lived-in and deeply felt. Whispers of Mazzy Star and Neko Case, her lyrics are playful, witty, and come from a heart space.

We first witnessed ann annie several years ago at Clay Street Studios, a ceramics and music studio they share with a community of artists in SE Portland. It felt like a house show. Intimate and casual. Friends and neighbors. A vibe we are always seeking here at Fumi. Their show was earthly, patient, and tender. We can’t wait to hear them play the shop piano.

Steven Leslie Douglas plays drums in Essie and the Hum and is a solo performer and song writer in his own right. He is also a dear friend and the curator of this special evening. We love seeing Steven’s genuine spirit platformed through his music. Grateful for what he is helping to bring to the Fumi space.

This is sure to be a intimate listening experience. Tea and snacks will be available for donation.

Essie Humberston is a princess of Neverland who was magicked into a frog at a very young age. A lot of people thought this was a devastating loss, but she was quite content to be green. Plus the magic that caused her metamorphosis stayed inside of her to this very day, and instead of croaking (which she still sometimes does), she sings songs and can hop to an average height.

Although naturally inclined to hermitude, it is said that Essie can be found singing and hopping around Portland, OR - especially when it rains, or near trains.

P.S. Do not try to kiss her - it will NOT turn her back to “normal” - it will just turn you into a frog (and in extreme cases a slimy slug).

ann annie is the stage name for PNW based composer Eli Goldberg. Starting out primarily as an electronic ambient musician, ann annie has brought various acoustic instruments into his compositions, most recently focusing on classical instruments. Goldberg’s live set ranges from large chamber orchestra groups, to solo piano performances. Each set is heavily improvised and different every night.

Steven “Leslie” Douglas enjoys writing music that is simple and straightforward. Typically written on acoustic guitar, his songs might feel honest, vulnerable, personable, or silly. He believes in the power of connection through music and pulls inspiration from Kurt Vile, Adrianne Lenker, and his local music scene in Portland, OR.
